The Canaanite Woman's Faith
August
Matthew 15:21-28
A woman who was not Jewish asked Jesus to cure her daughter. He did not do so right away because he wanted to see how strong her faith was. When she insisted he cured her daughter because her faith was so strong.
The Gospel Story Through Gameplay

Children are first asked to find the Canaanite woman in her home.  After finding the woman standing by the bed of her daughter, the woman states, “My daughter is sick.  I need a bowl of water and a rag to cool her fever.”

Children go outside and find a bowl.  They then take the bowl to a well and fill it with water then bring it to the home.  Kids then find a merchant selling towels.  The merchant tells them that towels cost 2 coins.  Children find the coins and then return to the shop to buy a towel.  They then take the towel to the woman in her home.

The woman then says, “There is nothing else that I can do.  I must go see Jesus.”  Children are instructed to follow the woman to Jesus.  Kids must clear the path so that the woman can get through.

After finding Jesus children watch a cinema of Matthew 15:21-24 and then are instructed to find a Bible over the water.  Children must cross the water on floating logs to get to the Bible then watch a cinema of Matthew 15:25-28.

Children then return to the Canaanite woman’s home where the woman tells them that her daughter is healed.  She asks them to go to the market to get bread and grapes far a celebration.  After children complete this task they are asked to find the Faith Focus and then enter the Bonus round.

The bonus round in this game includes teleporting to a castle maze where there are many puzzles to solve and tokens to collect.  They can find their way to the castle a second time and explore the outside as well as the inside before finding the cross to end the game.

What kinds of things do we do to help someone who is sick?  Do you pray for healing for the sick person?  What would you do to celebrate after a sick person is healed?

(Each month, “Light The Fire” will contain some fun gameplay activities related to the Gospel story. Use it to start a discussion with your children about this month’s Bible story game.)

PASTOR'S COMMENTS

In this month’s Gospel Champions game, children find items to help the Canaanite woman care for her sick child.  There are many ways that we can help care for the sick.  What are some ways that you can think of that you can do?

(The “Pastor’s Comment” can be used after the Gospel reading to get the kids excited about the lesson and the related game.)

Saint Monica

Children find this special token on a raised platform where a celebration is taking place.

They learn that Saint Monica prayed for 17 years for the conversion of her husband and son.  Her husband converted on his deathbed.  Her son also converted and became Saint Augustine.  Saint Monica is the patron saint of wives and mothers.
